Askja Volcano Day Trip
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Akureyri and travel inland to visit the Askja volcano.
During our tour, we'll enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the north of the country as we drive through the Lake Myvatn area to the Hrossaborg crater, where we'll take the mountain road that will lead us to Herðubreiðalindir, a beautiful green oasis in the middle of a totally barren volcanic landscape.
Not only will we admire this unusual location, but we'll also learn about the legend of the outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur, and what made him come to Herðubreiðalindir. We'll return to the minibus and continue touring Iceland's almost lunar-like terrain, used even by NASA itself to train its astronauts.
When we arrive at the Askja volcano, we'll start walking along the trails that surround its craters and lakes, stopping at two of them: Askja and Viti, the latter smaller and formed inside the crater. Besides discovering this fascinating natural environment, you can enjoy a bath in a hot springs lagoon - the perfect place to relax!
Before returning, we'll visit the canyon of the dragons or Drekagil, nestled between breathtaking black walls.
Lastly, we'll make our way back to Akureyri, where we will end the excursion at 8 pm.
