Dettifoss & Lake Mývatn Day Trip
At 9 am, we'll leave our meeting point behind and head to the Dettifoss Waterfall. On the way there, we'll pass through some beautiful places in northern Iceland.
To begin, we'll drive along the coast of Eyjafjorður until we get to Fnjóskadalur Valley. We'll make our first stop of the day here to see Goðafoss Waterfall, where the Christianization of Iceland began as a result of dramatic events that took place at this site.
Next we'll drive to the volcanic Lake Mývatn region and walk through its craters, which were formed 2,300 years ago. In addition, we'll see a lava labyrinth and some peculiar rock formations. The next stop on our tour will be the small village of Reykjahlid, where you'll have some free time to eat lunch on your own and relax.
Once we've reconvened, we'll stroll along the Fumaroles on Hverarond Valley and visit the Viti Crater, the formation of which resulted in the Mývatn fires. When we get there, you'll look out at spectacular views from the crater.
We'll then come to Dettifoss, which is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Here, we'll hike through the Vatnajökull National Park and be blown away by the roaring sound of the water. We'll also explore the Jökulsárgljúfur Canyon, which is 82 feet (25 metres) long and over 330 feet (100 metres) deep.
It'll then be time to start our return journey to Akureyri. On the way back, we'll stop at the Dimmuborgir lava formations and Eyjafjorður, from which we'll look out at breathtaking views of the Akureyri Fjord.
Our day trip will finish at around 5 pm.
