South Iceland Waterfalls and Glacial Lake: 2 Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1

We leave Reykjavik in the morning, hitting the road and crossing the Icelandic countryside between the coast and the volcanic mountains. From the bus, you'll be able to see Hengill mountain, an active volcano whose magma chamber provides power for much of the electricity on the island.

The tour then continues to Hvolsvöllur, a small town near to the Eyjafjallajokull, volcano, which famously blocked plane routes throughout Europe having erupted in 2010. Having rested here a little, we'll continue to the Skógafoss waterfall. Many consider this waterfall, cut between the cliffs, to be the most beautiful on the island.

We'll leave Skógafoss behind and make a stop on the way to the Jökulsárlón glacial lake to stretch your legs and eat a spot of lunch (not included). Here you'll discover an impressive landscape that covers more than 18 square kilometres and is dominated by the icebergs which fall from the enormous glacier nearby and float towards the ocean.

At 4 pm we'll arrive at the little hotel in a nearby village (Gerði Country Hotel), where you'll have some well deserved free time until the next day.

And in the winter months, if the skies are clear, you might enjoy the spectacular Northern Lights, an amazing end to an amazing day,

Day 2

Having eaten breakfast, we'll make a guided tour of the area, known as Thröng, admiring the contrast between the nearby glacier and the plains. Then back at the hotel, you'll have two hours of free time to rest and explore the area at your own pace.

Then we take the bus to the Jökulsárlón glacial lake, where you'll have a little over 30 minutes of free time to wander around the lake, enjoy the views and the beauty of Iceland's nature. You can explore the black sand beaches of the coast, where it's even common to find seals and a wide variety of local bird species.

Then, on the way back to Reykjavik we'll make a stop in the village of Vik, where you'll be able to stretch your legs and buy a little dinner (not included).

Our last stop is at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, an impressive sight at more than 200 feet (60 metres). We'll enter into the cave behind the sheet of water and appreciate the volcanic landscape of the island through its curtain.

The tour returns to Reykjavik at about 10 pm.

Meeting Points

When making your reservation you'll see a list including the majority of the hotels in Reykjavik. Next to the name of your hotel, you will find the nearest meet point. As the majority of the streets in the centre are not accessible by bus, you will need to make your way to a nearby location, indicated as a "bus stop" and with a number.

For example, if you choose "20:30 - 1919 Hotel Radisson BLU (Please stand by for pick up at bus stop no 4 - Tryggvagata))" you should be ready at 8:30 pm at bus stop 4 (Tryggvagata). You'll find details about the location of the stop in the reservation confirmation.
